What Is GitHub Copilot?
GitHub Copilot is an AI coding assistant made by GitHub, the code hosting platform owned by Microsoft. It works inside the code editor: as a developer types, it suggests the next line or a whole function, and in a chat panel it answers questions about the code, explains errors and drafts changes. It was introduced as a preview in 2021 and became generally available in 2022.
Copilot reads the code around the cursor and in related files and sends this context to an AI model in the cloud, which returns suggestions. Developers can choose between models from several AI companies, including Anthropic's Claude and Google's Gemini. Beyond suggestions, an agent mode can plan and make changes across several files, Copilot can draft pull request descriptions, and suggestions that match public code can be blocked or shown with a reference.
Copilot is a cloud service with a free plan for limited use and paid plans for individuals, businesses and enterprises. Data handling depends on the plan: GitHub doesn't use Business and Enterprise users' code to train its models, while on individual plans interaction data may be used for training unless the user turns this off in the settings. That's why the plan and its settings matter as much as the tool itself.
Where We Use GitHub Copilot
Copilot takes on the repetitive parts of coding so our developers can focus on structure, design and quality. We use it mainly for:
Repetitive Code
Form fields, data models, translation files for Turkish, English and Arabic, and other patterns that follow a clear rule are drafted with Copilot's help, then checked line by line by the developer.
Writing Tests
We ask Copilot to draft unit tests for the functions we've written, then add the edge cases that matter for your project. More tests mean fewer surprises after launch.
Documentation and Comments
Copilot helps draft code comments, setup notes and pull request descriptions, so the project stays understandable for your team or any developer who takes it over later.
Reading Existing Code
When we take over an existing project, Copilot Chat helps us understand unfamiliar code faster and suggests safer ways to restructure it; every change still goes through our review.
Why GitHub Copilot?
Time for What Matters
Less time on routine code means more time for design details, accessibility and performance, the parts that make a site feel right.
Part of Our Workflow
Copilot works in our editor and on GitHub, where our code and pull requests already live, so it fits our existing review process instead of adding another step.
Controls for Privacy
On business plans GitHub doesn't train its models on your code, suggestions that match public code can be blocked, and the model can be chosen for each task.
How We Work on Your Project
Copilot works alongside our developers throughout the build, not in their place. The architecture, components and key decisions come from the team; Copilot speeds up the routine parts. Every change is tracked in Git, reviewed in a pull request on GitHub and tested before it's merged.
Before handover we review the code for quality, security and license issues and measure the site with Lighthouse and PageSpeed Insights. Passwords, API keys and customer data are never pasted into Copilot; they live in protected environment settings outside the code, so they appear neither in prompts nor in the repository.
