Vite

Vite is an open-source build tool for front-end projects: it shows every change instantly while we code and prepares lean, optimized files for launch. We use it in Vue, React and plain JavaScript projects.

What Is Vite?

Vite (French for “quick”, pronounced “veet”) is an open-source front-end build tool. Evan You, the creator of Vue, started it in 2020, and since 2021 it has worked with any framework. It has two parts: a development server used while the site is being built, and a build command that turns the source code into optimized files for the live site.

During development, Vite serves code to the browser as native JavaScript modules, so only the files a page needs are processed. When a file changes, hot module replacement updates just that part in the browser, without a full reload. For production, Vite bundles the code with Rolldown, a fast bundler written in Rust, splits it into pieces that load only where needed, minifies it and adds a content-based fingerprint to each file name, so browsers can safely cache files for a long time.

Vite is free and open source under the MIT license and is stewarded by the Vite team. In 2024 Evan You founded VoidZero, a company working on Vite and related tools, and in 2026 VoidZero joined Cloudflare; Vite remains vendor-agnostic, so sites built with it run on any hosting. It is the standard starting point for new Vue projects, and Astro is built on it.

Where We Use Vite

Vite works behind the scenes in our front-end projects. We use it especially for:

  • Vue and React Projects

Interfaces, panels and applications built with Vue or React start from a Vite setup, with TypeScript where it helps. The same tool serves the project during development and builds it for launch.

  • Plain JavaScript Sites

Not every site needs a framework. For simpler sites built with HTML, CSS and JavaScript, Vite still bundles the modules, processes the CSS and gives every file a cache-friendly name.

  • Live Design Reviews

Because changes appear in the browser instantly, a developer and a designer can refine spacing, colors and motion together on screen, comparing the result with the Figma design as they go.

  • Embeddable Components

A calculator, a booking form or a small app that needs to appear on more than one site can be packaged once with Vite's library mode and then added to each site.

Why Vite?

  • Instant Feedback

The development server starts quickly and changes appear in a moment, so we spend our time on the details of your site rather than waiting for builds.

  • Lean, Cache-Friendly Files

Code is split so each page loads only what it needs, files are minified, and content-based names let browsers and Cloudflare keep them cached for a long time.

  • Open and Portable

Vite is free, works with Vue, React and plain JavaScript, and produces standard files any host can serve, so your project isn't locked to a provider.

How We Work on Your Project

At the start of a project we set up Vite with the right template for Vue, React or plain JavaScript, add TypeScript where it helps and agree on the folder structure. While we build, every change appears in the browser at once, which keeps design reviews short and focused.

Before launch we run a production build, check the size of each file and what each page loads, and measure the result with Lighthouse. The finished files are served through Cloudflare, and the project is handed over to you with its build settings and full history.

Frequently Asked Questions

Help Center
Does Vite run on my live site?

No. Vite works while the site is being developed and built. Visitors receive the finished, optimized files, and nothing from Vite needs to run on your server.

Is Vite free?

Yes. Vite is free and open source under the MIT license. VoidZero, the company behind it, joined Cloudflare in 2026 without changing that: Vite stays vendor-agnostic, and sites built with it can be hosted anywhere.

Can an existing project be moved to Vite?

Often, yes. We review the current build setup and the project's dependencies, move it over step by step and compare the result with the old version before switching.

Can our own developers work on a Vite project?

Yes. Vite projects follow a standard structure with clear commands to start, build and preview the site, so front-end developers can pick them up easily. We explain the setup to your team at handover.
